Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
I apologize for taking the floor. Since we did not speak yesterday, I would not like to miss the opportunity to thank the DG for his consistent and conscientious efforts in guiding us in the negotiations against the backdrop of the ongoing deteriorating global financial and economic crisis, and to thank the two Chairs of Agriculture and NAMA for tabling the revised texts as well as all other Chairs for their reports. I would also like to express our support to the statements of G20, G33 and other developing groups.
Mr. Chairman, since we have invested hugely into this process over the past 7 years, we support the idea to preserve the existing progress, with an appropriate treatment of the two Chairs’ texts by the General Council, and support the road map that the DG described for next year’s negotiations. At the same time, we would urge Members to keep bearing in mind two important principles:
First, we should stick to the mandates Members have agreed to at various ministerials, which reflect the delicate balance among different interests. To reopen any of them would increase difficulties for us to conclude the round.
Second, we should remain committed to the developmental objective, which is not only unique to this Round, but also epoch-making for the multilateral trading system. Obviously, there are still many development issues that remain to be resolved, such as cotton, duty-free-quota-free for LDCs, as the Bangladesh Ambassador has pointed out.
Finally, Mr. Chairman, China wishes to reiterate its firm commitment to working with all other Members for a successful conclusion of the Doha Development Round.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
