Thank you, Mr. Chairman,
We would like to join others in welcoming the Delegation of Jordan headed by His Excellency Minister Al-Hadidi to its first Trade Policy Review. Before going to the substance, we would like to thank the Minister for his comprehensive opening statement as well as the Report of the Jordanian Government. As usual, we find the Secretariat Report for this review of high quality. We thank the Secretariat for its efforts. Again, our appreciation also goes to the Discussant, Mr. Khan, for his useful comments.
Mr. Chairman, China and Jordan enjoy friendly relationship and good cooperation. King Abdullah II paid nine visits to China, including three times as Prince. China and Jordan are important trading partners as well. In the first eight months of 2008, bilateral trade amounted to 1.23 billion US Dollars, an increase of 55.5% over the same period of last year.
As of June 2008, China has made FDI of 11.56 million US dollars in Jordan. Major areas of investment are household electrical appliances and textiles and clothing. On the other hand, Jordanian investment in China is 38.38 million US dollars, mostly related to building materials and textiles and clothing.
In December 2005, China and Jordan signed Bilateral Labor Service Cooperation Agreement. As of June 2008, labor service cooperation provided by China valued 390 million US dollars.
Mr. Chairman, Jordan is a net food importing country with limited natural resources, including arable land. However, as noted by the Secretariat Report, Jordan has made tremendous achievements in economic performance through continuing reforms. Real GDP growth has been at remarkably 6%. Average inflation has been relatively low. Foreign currency reserves have reached 6.9 billion US dollars. The competitiveness of Jordanian economy keeps improving. As a good friend and important trading partner, China congratulates Jordan for these achievements.
China and Jordan also share a lot in common in the WTO. Among other things, both countries are Recently Acceded Developing Members and have jointly made tremendous contributions to the multilateral trading system with extensive and comprehensive accession commitments. China stands ready to work with Jordan and other Members to strive for an early conclusion of the DDA Negotiations.
In conclusion, we wish the Trade Policy Review of Jordan a complete success!
I thank you, Mr. Chairman.
